I had cause recently to try my hand at poetry as a mechanism for creatively expressing emotion. Now my only emotion is a feeling of being crap at poetry. It is expressed easily with the following haiku:
sad feelings like a, um
something something syllables
But before that sudden drop in range, there were some emotions related to social anxiety which I found room to express in prose. Short stories are more my natural style, after all.
With all the fuss about smart watches these days (disclaimer: I’m on my third pebble), I wanted to highlight their darker side in a short story. Ended up showing some of humanity’s darker side too, so as to not make the watches look too bad.
I just went and did a bit of interviewing in the US, the time on plane flights was enough for me to write a short story on the subject. I had been researching the issue for some time as well in preparation, which ended up more useful for humor writing than for actual interviewing. Thus it’s based on the stereotypes, not on my actual experiences (except that the Zerg were on my mind after one particular interview 😉 ).
Filling out my backlog took an obvious and lengthy pause due to illness. Fortunately the fevered imaginings of a man on his death bed is perfect for creative writing; pity I only had a cold. It still led to some fresh material, and here it is.
This story is taking a stance (albeit one open to interpretation) on “the empire”, which is always evil in Sci-fi.
