Quick builder-game reviews

I was playing a bunch of different little games recently, with a common (if stretched) theme of city builders. I thought Iā€™d give some quick reviews here to share my thoughts – they all had things to like. Giving the verdict on the same line as the title to avoid suspense, since I’m not giving detailed verdicts anyway.

Heroes of the Storm – Dragon Shire Origin Story

At the start of this year I was really enjoying Heroes of the Storm, a new DotA-clone by Blizzard Entertainment. I was even going to write a review before the beta came out, but then the beta re-worked my favorite hero and I lost interest (even though he was too powerful, so he deserved it). Before I started drafting the review though, I wrote some HotS fan-fic on a flight somewhere. Mostly because of the challenge, this isn’t a deep and lore-driven world like the three it’s based on. But I overcame that, to write this backstory for the map “Dragon Shire”.

Disgaea DS Review

The fledgling review section isn’t complete without an example of a positive review. Fortunately a relevant milestone has come up. I recently passed over 256 hours on my primary Disgaea DS save slot. It doesn’t get that far along unless I’m giving it a šŸ™‚ verdict.

Paltry PC Ports

I got a new game recently. It inspired me to rant about porting console games to PC. I used to think that it should happen more often, but I’m no longer convinced that game developers are competent enough to turn even a good console game into a quality PC port.

Checkers as she is wrote

It’ll come as no surprise to anyone that I like writing QML games, my gitorious account is littered with the prototypes I’ve thrown up in a few hours for fun. I’ve done another one which has proved to be extra-large: about a full working day’s effort scattered across a couple of nights.https://github.com/416365416c/checkers has a QML checkers prototype, with Human-on-Human and VS AI modes. It was fun and educational, which is good because checkers isn’t a very interesting game otherwise šŸ˜‰ .

Game Generator

I was discussing games at work recently, and ended up analyzing Hero Academy as a card-based TBS with a interesting global action points mechanic. I’m probably mis-characterizing Hero Academy, as I’ve never even finished a game, but at least that fits my pattern of video game analysis. I started to sound so formulaic that my past enjoyment of madlibs led me to create stochastic strings following this formula; they sound just like me but are sometimes amusing and thought-provoking.

Pandemic Review

One piece that has been requested is for me to write up my review of Pandemic, by Matt Leacock. It was requested in the vein of “If you don’t like it, justify that verdict”. So I’ll skip to the end, which you’ve guessed already. Verdict: šŸ™ .
